A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key (USB E-Token) issued by recognised Certifying Authorities (CAs) that contains the signature in digital format. It also includes the data of the name of the individual or organization, date of issuance of the certificate, date of expiry and the name of the Certifying Authory (CA)
Usually it takes 2-4 hours for processing the DSC application, after which the token is couriered (in case of new application) to you.

DGFT stands for Directorate General of Foreign Trade. These kind of DSCs are exclusively used by Organizations to use during the foreign trade activities. It comes only with the “Signature” type DSC, with a validity of 2 or 3 years.

Class 2 Digital Signature used to be used for Income Tax filing, incorporation of a Private Limited Company or LLP, filing of Annual Returns and whenever e-filings are done with MCA and Income Tax Department. It has now been discontinued from 1st, 2021 and replaced by Class 3 DSC.
If you want to register for e-tenders or e-auctions or e-procurement you mandatorily need to have a Class 3 DSC. Also government bodies like Indian Railways, National Banks may have to get DSC for tenders. Additionally all Class 2 DSC activities are now included under Class 3 DSC including IT Filing, MCA Compliances & GST Filing etc.
A Digital Signature Certificate is valid for 2 or 3 years from the time of issuance.
Every DSC has a start date and end date. If your DSC expires you can apply again for a DSC renewal.
Yes, a USB token is mandatory as per the Government’s notification, because it is not vulnerable to virus attacks, thereby offering the highest level of security.
Yes, as per the revised CCA guidelines DSC 2 has been discontinued and Class 2 certificates can no more be issued after December 31st 2020.
From January 1st 2021 all Certifying authorities can issue only Class 3 individual and organization certificates.
Users who already have the class 2 DSC’s, can continue to use the same until the expiry in the sites which are accepting the class 2 DSC’s.
